Scammer Posing As TD Bank Steals 13K From Ottawa Couple
An Ottawa couple, Janel Nguyen and Evan Dudley, received a phone call whom they thought was from TD Bank. The scammer said he was from the bank’s fraud department saying that there were fraudulent charges on Nguyen’s credit card and they needed to verify it was her. They provided basic information which appeared to Nguyen as her bank credentials.
The scammers said they were going to send her a new 4 digit pin code to lock the card but during this time, they were able to max out her card and take cash advances. When Nguyen realized it, it was too late.
They immediately went to TD Bank but the bank said it was their responsibility and they would have to cover the loss. Nguyen and Dudley filed a police report but it is unlikely they will recover any of the money. In addition, TD Bank is charging them interest on the amount stolen.
“Just hang up the phone and call your own bank back, there’s no point in trusting anyone over the phone these days honestly,” Nguyen said.

Closing Remarks:
We feel for Nguyen and Dudley, it is one answered phone call that can change your life. In the event you answer a call such as this, just hang up. Log in to your bank app and lock your cards until you can get on the phone with the bank that you call and confirm that there are no issues with your cards.
